Wildside and HSM both have had record sign-ups for small groups and we NEED you. If you love God and like students we would love to get you connected in student ministries. Here are a few ways you can get involved.

Small Group Leaders: We need people to lead C-groups for Wildside (Jr. High Students) or Small Groups for HSM (Sr. High Students). Here are some recent fears we have heard from other people interested in leading a group.

Some common fears are:
        1. "I must know all the Bible"
False: We want you to love God and show students that are you are                          continuly learning more about Jesus and the Scriptures

        2. "I am not a good teacher"
This is OK we will provide you with a lesson to teach each week and                 questions that will help you with discussion

        3. "I do not have a place to meet"
Great, we will find and place you in a home to meet. You do not have to do                 anything besides show up

Host Homes: Students meet in homes each week and we need places for them to meet. If you have a heart for hosptiality then we would love to talk to you.

If either of these options stand out to you please contact:

Special Edition: Life Management Week 2 – Managing My Troubles

We can rejoice when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—
they help us learn to be patient.
(Romans 5:3 LB)

Work troubles can range from a small inconvenience to a more threatening or oppressive matter. The troubles we face in our work could be as a result of working for a critical and demeaning supervisor, the presence of office gossip, managing a negative cash flow or even from not having the time and resources to meet an increase in sales.

Troubles are just a fact of life. Jesus told us in John 16:33 …in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world. (NIV) How we respond to the troubles and work difficulties that come our way will depend upon what we think about them.

Are troubles an obstacle and an inconvenience to our day or are they a means for us to find that peace in Christ as we work on new solutions to unsolvable problems?

God uses problems to direct us. – Where is this leading me?

Sometimes it takes a painful experience to make us change our ways.
(Proverbs 20:30 TEV)
We don't change when we see the light; we change when we feel the heat.

God uses problems to inspect us. – What does this problem reveal about me?

[The Lord] searches all hearts and examines deepest motives so he can give to each person his right reward, according to his deeds—how he has lived.
(Jeremiah 17:10 LB)
People are like tea bags—you don't know what's inside them until you drop them in hot water.

God uses problems to correct us. – What is this problem teaching me?

God teaches people through suffering and uses distress to open their eyes.
(Job 36:15 TEV)
Punishment is punitive toward the past; correction is positive toward the future.

God uses problems to protect us. – How is this problem protecting me?

You intended to harm me, but God intended it for good . . .
(Genesis 50:20 NIV)
Because we don't see God immediately in the midst of the problem doesn't mean he isn't there.

God uses problems to perfect us. – How can I grow from this problem?

We can rejoice when we run into problems and trials, for we know that they are good for us—they help us learn to be patient. And patience develops strength of character in us and helps us trust God more each time we use it . . .
(Romans 5:3-4 LB)
You can allow the problem to make you bitter or better. It can be a stumbling block or a stepping stone. The choice is yours.

Until next week...

Discussion Questions:

  1. Find some quiet time this week to list out your work problems and ask God to help you see the reason and purpose behind each of those problems. As you pray about these problems keep a record of how God answers your prayers and shows himself in your work.
  2. We can unknowingly be a source of trouble for someone else. As you are more conscious of your work habits and relationships, do you find yourself naturally encouraging your co-workers or is it all about your work needs?
  3. Who do you know that needs to see purpose behind their troubles? How can you support them, encourage them or pray for them?

With Saddleback Church's thirty-year history of using 79 different meeting locations and finally settling in at 1 Saddleback Parkway, I found Dave's advice golden, not only for church planters, but for leaders of any congregation...

The inability to actually secure buildings for churches to use as meeting places eliminated the pressure to find a place, kept the focus on the real mission of the church, and released resources for disciplemaking.

Church Planters in the U.S. must resist the temptation to become obsessed with the building and what takes place in the building, as well as measuring success by the size or fullness of the building...

I hope you'll consider how these might influence you in your church planting context:

  1. Be absolutely clear on what your church is about!
  2. Fight against Consumer Christianity and for Missional Christianity.
  3. Use the building less frequently by being “the church” in local neighborhoods.
  4. Let groups and organizations in your community use your building – for free!
  5. Watch carefully that your financial resources are not consumed by building expenses.
  6. Use language that prevents the building from becoming known as the church.
  7. Create a multi-use feel to the space so that no one identifies it for exclusive groups or purposes.
  8. Teach everyone that the Church is the “people of God” and the building is a tool.
  9. Be the visible presence of Christ’s Church in your community.
  10. Sponsor community events in your building.
  11. Don’t use the building for Bible studies, small groups, or missional communities.
  12. Don’t make everything about the “Sunday Show.”

You really need to read Dave's full article with an expansion of each point and join the discussion on his blog. Read 12 Thoughts for Church Planters: How Not to Focus on Church Buildings.
